Three rides from Manzanita this week on highway 101, the Pacific Coast Highway. Two going south:
The final day's ride was foggy and cold and stayed that way for most of the way. Started on roller coaster hills for the first 16 miles then a big climb up to Otter Loop drive which climbed for 2 miles gaining over 600 ft at 4 to 7 % grade. Sun came out for awhile on top and I found a view point to have lunch. Then down for another 2 miles and another 8 miles of roller coaster hills to my final destination -- Newport.
The views of the ocean were fantastic.
Total trip miles: 335, total elevation gain: 12,863 ft.
Left Tillamook and headed south on Highway 101 for about 13 miles then turned off following the Oregon Coast Bicycle ride which headed up a long hill. It was a cold and foggy morning. After the down hill the rest of the rife was up and down roller coaster of steep hills. Sun came before hitting the ocean again and reaching Pacific City.
The next day followed Highway 101 south again. For about 10 miles, Then started up the biggest climb on this trip! A climb of 2.7 miles at 7 to 9% and elevation gain of 795 ft. A taxing climb with a long descent to follow. After that again a roller coaster of up and down hills all the way to Lincoln City.
Total miles = 307, Total Elevation Gain = 11,611 ft.
From Seaside south, the road started as nice and flat but soon ended in three major climbs. First one over a mile at 5-6%, the next two over two miles each and with 6-7% grades!! The views were amazing.
The next day from Nehalem to Tillamook was a flat days ride with low clouds, fog, thunder, lighting, and one hour of deluge rain that soaked everything I was wearing. The rest of the ride was cold in wet clothes with beautiful views!
Total Miles = 257, Total Elevation Gain = 9,464 ft.
From Montesano, Highway 107 heads SW to hit Highway 101. After a few climbs which seemed like passes. Then 101 south and more long climbs to reach South Bend. The motel Seaquest in South Bend was lovely with everything a tired rider needed -- reclining chair, bathtub, small kitchenette, and comfortable bed.
Then south again on Highway 101 and a long hill at 5 miles and then a roller coaster of hills one after the other all the way to Long Beach for a day of rest before going over the Columbia river at Astoria Bridge and into Oregon tomorrow.
Total Miles: 177, Total Elevation Gain: 6,605 ft.
